A Historical Glimpse
Taiz governorate like other governorates witnessed developments throughout differ- ent historical epochs e.g. Al-Barh area gave evidence of stone age settlements, scrib- bling was found Edar Cave in Asabih Valley. Musnad engraved writing were found in Jabal Habshi , namely Jubaa and Sawa. Temples , cistermns, canals and dams were also found . Jibaie Tribes were partners in commerce with the Mainites during the prosperity of the Oilbanum Caravan route namely incense whose main Arab market was Al-Janad.
During Independent Islamic State . Taiz was capital if those strongest states of the longest tenure and mention and that is the Rasoolide state which reigned during the period from 626 Hegira _ 858 Hegira i.e. AD 1226-AD1454. Mosques ,relics, minaret , fortification and watchtowers dating back to that time are the most important in Yemen .In modern times Taiz has witnessed agricultural and commercial distinguished activity due to the prosperity of Coffee Agriculture which is world wide fames. Coffee is an indigenous Yemenite plant which spread to the world ,the allegation that it was originated in Ethiopia has no support in the Arab or international Coffee scientific and commercial Annals regardless of Mount kaffa in Ethiopia in fact the word etymologically comes from Arabic Qahwa which was modified by the Turks who occupied Yemen and introduced Coffee to Europe under the name kahveh and Europeans gave it the name of Coffee , kafee ..cafe.. etc Moca seaport remained the most important Yemeni Coffee and trade seaport until the 19th century AD. Taiz served also during the century as capital if notorious Imnm Ahmed during the period from 1948-1362
Location :
To the south of capital Sana'a km256 away , lying between latitude 12-14 north of the equatorial line and 45-43 longitude east of Greebwich , bounded to the east by parts of Lahj Governorate, Dhalea and Ibb , by Lahj Governorate to the south and the Red sea from the west.
Relief:
The relief of Taiz province ranges between mountain heights interspersed with valleys, plains and plateaux. Heights range between 3200-1000 meters above sea level . Main mountains are Masnamah, Haramiyah, Jabal Habashi. Jabal Samiae, Alsilou, Sharaab, Makbanah, Wazieyah. Maneef mountain, Samadan, Qadas mountains , Jabal Haifan, Jabal Sbair the second in height at the level of the peninsula.
